Creative Portraiture Class

The Creative Portraiture class I will be teaching at AVA (Association for Visual Arts) begins in one week! There are a limited amount of spots left, so make sure to sign up as soon as possible.  This class was a total blast to teach in Charlotte and I’m really excited about the chance to teach it again here in Chattanooga.  Go HERE to register.

Below are excerpts of blog posts that two of my students posted about the Charlotte class.

Love to Learn

A great thing about photography is that there is always something you can learn. I enjoy learning from other pro photographers who have developed an artistic style and a business model that has brought them a level of success. It’s enlightening and so informative meeting a photographer who is confident about their work and successful in their business.

I recently completed a Creative Portraiture course at the Light Factory  http://www.lightfactory.org/ . Teaching the class was Kim Hunter of Kim Hunter Studio www.kimhunterstudio.com . Kim is a talented portrait and wedding photographer who uses natural light and minimal gear to create her wonderful portraits. I enjoy working with natural light when creating portraits, so I found Kim’s photographic insights and tips very helpful. Kim also spoke about her business approach and the use of social media within the photography market, great information!

The class had some great photo sessions in down town Charlotte. After a photo session, we held a photo critique and commented on each photo’s content and composition. Without continuous critique of your work, it is difficult to grow as an artist. You also learn so much by seeing how other photographers compose and photograph a session. I really enjoy studying someones creative composition and personal style within a photograph. Always learning!

Center City Charlotte, NC Portrait Photography | Creative Portraiture Workshop

A couple of weeks ago I was excited to attend Kim Hunter’s creative portraiture workshop through The Light Factory.  For those who don’t know, The Light Factory is a museum for photography and film, one of only four such institutions in the country.  I encourage all to go and show them some love, spend an afternoon looking at art, and tell Charles I say hello!

As for the workshop itself; Kim Hunter = the gnu’s shoes.  She has an incredible background in film and digital photography.  Often times when someone knows so much about a particular subject, they might find it difficult to teach.  Because, teaching is also an art.  Kim had an incredible ability to deliver a depth of knowledge in such a succinct manner, that everything I’ve ever learned finally made sense.  Aha!  I finally understood the why behind great composition.  I left the workshop feeling much more confident, and more in tune with the creative voice inside my mind.
